Terrawatu is registered as a charitable, non-governmental organization (NGO) with the Registrar of Societies in The United Republic of Tanzania (So. No. 11220).

The board, program leadership, and international advisory council of Terrawatu are a unique group of people representing both the cultural foundations that define indigenous and modern worlds and the bridge that connects these lands.

The board and Tanzanian membership are comprised of people who have maintained strong ties to their indigenous roots and are critical of some of the changes that have come to their communities as a result of various downsides of development. They all seek to share their indigenous knowledge with people in modern societies in exchange for learning how to develop in ways that are less destructive to their natural and social environments.
