What is Terrawatu?

Terrawatu is a vision. A vision we are putting into practice through the work of our organization. We believe that there is a way to live that combines indigenous wisdom with modern know-how. And, that meeting on the bridge that links indigenous and modern worlds helps define the foundation for a more peaceful and sustainable global society.

We continue to articulate what this lifestyle looks like, and we learn everyday from the projects we are working on in the villages of East Africa, America and Europe. Through our work with conserving medicinal plants and traditional healing knowledge, support for global classroom projects, cross-cultural exposure through our People-to-People Safaris, and writing and dialogue, we are attempting to combine the “good parts” of disparate worlds and cultures to begin to articulate a vision for the future. We rely on the ongoing conversations we have with those of you around the world who contribute to this vision and know that together we will continue to inform and inspire those working on the environmental and social challenges of today.

How can we visit you in Tanzania?

There are two ways to visit us in Tanzania - for pleasure and/or for work. Our People-to-People Safaris are custom-made journeys that combine the African safari experience with in-depth visits to communities. These experiences can also include service learning projects. Those interested in helping us build on what we are creating here in a working capacity should contact us about your interest and expertise in the following areas: writing/public relations, teaching/curriculum design, organizational development/grant writing, small business development, fundraising, and IT development and support. This work is on an exchange system and we negotiate the terms of the agreement with each of you individually. Contact us at info@terrawatu.org.

Can we hear more about your work in-person?

Yes. Dr. Tanya Pergola, Terrawatu's International Relations Officer is available for speaking engagements at schools, universities, social investment companies, travel associations and others interested in Terrawatu's mission. Dr. Pergola is a very inspirational speaker and gives audiences fascinating and challenging insights into global realities and strategies for societal change. Contact info@terrawatu.org.

Who is funding you?

Terrawatu is supported by development funding sources, visitor expenditures for educational-cultural journeys, and the generosity and gifts of people who value our work. In the past year, Terrawatu has received funding from USAID (US Agency for International Development), World Bank, and numerous individual supporters and private donors in the United States and Europe. Built into all project plans is the goal of self-sustainability. Revenue generated from project activities is re-invested into program activities.

Do you need volunteers to help with your work in Tanzania?

At this time we are relying primarily on local people in Tanzania to staff our projects. We do enter into agreements with global volunteers who are able to dedicate two or more months of time in Tanzania and have the skills needed to significantly enhance our activities. Feel free to email us at info@terrawatu.org with your proposal for volunteering your time and expertise.
